Moses and the prophets had developed a religion that was centrally concerned with ethics and left no room whatsoever for torture either in this life or in the hereafter; indeed they did not recognize any hereafter. Christianity and Islam followed Zarathustra in dividing humanity into two camps—the followers of the Truth and the Lie—and in looking forward to the eternal bliss of the former and the eternal torment of the latter. This moral and eschatological dualism became central in the New Testament and in the Koran. (RE 62)
